What counts as an active contact?
An active contact is any unique contact with at least one event recorded in the trailing 30 days — an email sent, a list change, an automation run, or a custom event. Dormant contacts (no activity in 30 days) do NOT count toward your active limit. This is a major advantage — competitors like Mailchimp and Klaviyo bill for all contacts regardless of activity.
What happens when I exceed my plan limits?
There are no overage fees and your campaigns are never paused. We'll notify you at 80% and 100% of your plan limits. If you exceed your tier, you simply move to the next plan on your next billing cycle — no surprise charges, no action required on your side.
Do I need to pay for email sending?
No — Notifuse uses a Bring Your Own ESP model. You connect your own email provider (Amazon SES, Postmark, SendGrid, Mailgun, Mailjet, SparkPost, or custom SMTP). We never charge per email. With Amazon SES at ~$0.10/1,000 emails, a Starter plan user sending 50K emails/month pays roughly $49 + $5 = $54/mo total.
I don't have an ESP yet. Is setup difficult?
Not at all. Most users connect Amazon SES or a standard SMTP server — it takes under 10 minutes. We provide step-by-step guides and verify your configuration automatically. You can also start your trial and configure your ESP later.
What happens after the 30-day trial?
During your trial, you get full access to all features with no credit card required. Before the trial ends, we'll remind you to pick a plan. If you don't subscribe, your instance is suspended (not deleted) — your data is preserved for 30 days so you can reactivate anytime.
Can I switch plans?
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately with prorated billing. Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing cycle.
What are monthly timeline entries?
Timeline entries are every contact interaction tracked by the platform: emails sent and engagement (delivery, open, click, bounce), list subscriptions, segment changes, automation runs, and custom events. If you exceed your timeline limit, you'll be auto-upgraded to the next tier on your next billing cycle.
Is my data safe? Where is it hosted?
Your data is hosted in the EU and we are fully GDPR compliant. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Each tenant runs in an isolated environment with dedicated database. Daily backups with point-in-time recovery ensure your data is always protected.
Is there a free option?
Yes — Notifuse is open-source (AGPL-3.0) and fully self-hostable with all features included. Notifuse Cloud is the managed, hassle-free version for teams who don't want to maintain their own infrastructure.
What does data retention mean?
Data retention determines how long event logs, timeline entries, and email activity are kept queryable for segmentation. After the retention window, data is permanently deleted. Contacts themselves are never deleted. Longer retention is critical for year-over-year comparisons — that's why the Pro plan at 24 months is popular with e-commerce teams.
